Too sugary to take

Having a liking for his acting, I’ve fairly watched any films of his. In order to catch up with few of the hits which was talked about I watched ‘Oru Vadakkan Selfie’, which is like his typical film where he’s a proud loser, fun guy without any motive and how he gets on with it. It came at a time when we were doing short films. I guess that’s the time everyone was doing short films, or may be because I was involved, I could see most of my friends doing the same. So, I remember one of my friends saying how the film talks about someone like us. That got me intrigued to watch the movie. As I was super busy around that time I couldn’t catch up with the movie.

Umesh Manohar (Nivin Pauly) is a carefree student in engineering college with ‘n’ number of arrears. Seeing the uniform, I thought he’s a school student, but no, he’s one step higher. Being good at nothing, he wanted to get into films and want to assist Gautham Vasudev Menon. He starts with Kim Ki Duk but ends up watching his thalaivar Gautham Vasudev Menon’s films. As he fails in all the paper, he runs out of his and goes to Chennai where he meets the girl next door Daisy (Manjima Mohan). It’s all fun till then.

The pointlessness of the movie works till that part, it tries to be too cute but Nivin Pauly kind of holds it with his charm. But just like Nani, after a point, it all gets boring. We know this is what Nivin has been doing day in and day out. Nivin is a much better actor than being just cutesy. He has to be properly used like ‘Premam’ which had a variety of all emotions. I’ve not seen any actor in recent time who could effortlessly make us feel for him. Nivin is a master of that. Here, in this film, we don’t get much chance to see that.

Unable to find the job he returns back to his house and knows that the girl next door is missing, the films approach drastically changes post that. The focus of attention shifts from Umesh to Daisy. And that’s when the film gets boring. Add to it, another funny character, Jack Tracker (Vineeth Sreenivasan) joins the gang in finding her out, who is outright irritating. With her antics and stupidness, Daisy repels us. We want them to leave her out to handle her situation and get back to their place. At least Umesh is with us till some time. Once he too joins the other gang in helping her out, it gets even more boring.

The final part with all the twists was such a drag. The movie could have been a good one hour short. The Bobby Simha cameo too was needless. So many twists just make the viewers distracted and these are the movies which work because of the feel and not because of the twists. Finally, we don’t even know whether Umesh was into Daisy or he just helped her, anyways that’s not a big disappointment, it was better left as such.

Wish the movie has carried on with the pointless way it started, without any heroine and with only Umesh and what he does with life. It needn’t have become a serious movie too. That would have been a more interesting watch, rather than getting mixed up in all these muddles. I was looking forward to one such movie and not a detective movie which tries to be too hard to be funny.
